What Will You Be Watching October 16?

Robin Wright Penn & Chris Cooper

As if one wasn’t enough, two eagerly anticipated movies will open the weekend of October 16, 2009. Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, the adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s much-loved children’s book, already had that date staked out (see the new trailer #2 below). Now, Vivendi Entertainment has decided to release New York, I Love You on the same day.

NY, ILY is a compilation of short stories set in the Big Apple, with each segment directed by a different person (including Brett Ratner, Mira Nair, Allen Hughes and Natalie Portman, who also acts in the Nair segment). The movie has a similar structure to 2006’s Paris, je t’aime, which also included Portman in the cast. I thought that movie was uneven though the scenery was spectacular.

The theme of this version is also love in all its different forms. Besides Portman, the powerhouse cast includes Julie Christie, Robin Wright Penn, Shia LaBeouf, Bradley Cooper, Chris Cooper, Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, Anton Yelchin (that kid’s been busy this summer), Blake Lively, Eli Wallach and many more.

What do you think of the trailer? I think I’m going to look into airfare to New York as soon as I finish writing this.

  1. New York, I Love You too! Way to whet my appetite for something that might not even be released in cinemas here in Australia, PCN. Argh. {OK, I understand that’s beyond your control. Is it? Do you know someone who knows someone?} Please, may it at least come out here on DVD. {Say hi to Alexa when you’re in NYC!}

  2. I actually loved Paris, je t’aime and thought the concept was cool. So, I’ve waited New York since I heard it was going to be made. And of course, the cast of both films is amazing! And the trailer’s great.

I heard they’re planning to make a Shanghai version as well. Do you know any rumors?

  3. I will be plunking my hard earned cash down for Where The Wild Things Are. I saw the trailer in the theatre and have been completely captivated. Using Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” for the trailer was
    brilliant.

  4. Haven’t we already seen NYILY – wasn’t it set in England and called ‘Love, Actually’?

  5. Shelley P, it’d be rude if it doesn’t come out in Australia! I don’t know him but one of the producers, Emmanuel Benbihy (he came up with the concept of doing love stories in different cities), is on Twitter at http://twitter.com/CitiesofLove. Send him a tweet and ask him when the Australian release is.

Poncho, not only is Shanghai planned, but also Rio (tentatively called Rio, Eu Te Amo) and Jerusalem. Shanghai is allegedly up next, planned to coincide with World Expo 2010 being held there. Where else would you like to see the movies set?

Debbie, the use of that song is perfect. It helps bring me unadulterated joy when I watch the trailer. Makes me nostalgic for when I was that age.

Corey, I think it’d be hard to be another Love, Actually. To me, every story, performance, scene and line in that movie is flawless. Even the DVD commentary is great.

    • Good question! Haven’t really thought about it… but now that you mention it, there might be a couple of cities worth exploiting, y’know?

I’m thinking Mexico City (ha! I’ve got to promote my country), or Madrid/Barcelona. Viena would be amazing, and I think Florence could be a great place as well.

      • Since you brought up Italy, Poncho – I’ll put up my hand for Venice {though Florence would also be lovely}. I want to see a movie that paints Venice with Love and lots of it, to once and for all drive away the goosebumps I still get if I think of Don’t Look Now !

    • That would require me to learn how to use Twitter, PCN. 🙂 You know I’ve been avoiding that.

  6. Man! I miss Manhattan so much and now you have to really yank on my heartstrings with this trailer? Oh, Man!

Yes, I’ll be in line for the New York, I Love You, but you can rest assured I’ll be also walk into Where The Wild Things Are. Probably wear some sort of shaggy beast outfit to immerse myself a bit deeper into the experience.

  7. AMAZING, Thank You so much, PCN, for the gift of this trailer! I have our inscribed copy of the book right here lovingly in hand, and am SO looking forward to the movie experience!

  8. So PCN, got room in your suitcase for me when you hit NY? I travel lite and don’t take up much room.

And I’m with you on WTWTA Deb. I’ll even be willing to pay *gulp* full price, not my norml $5 matinee. Love that song. Reminds me of a few U2 concerts I’ve experienced. =D
