PETA’s Controversial, Sexy Ad about Eating Veggies (video)

Have you seen this PETA ad yet? NBC has refused to air it during the Super Bowl this weekend, deeming it too sexy for the following reasons: (Warning—explicit language involved!)

  •  licking pumpkin
  •  touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli
  •  pumpkin from behind between legs
  •  rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin
  •  screwing herself with broccoli (fuzzy)
  • asparagus on her lap appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina
  •  licking eggplant
  • rubbing asparagus on breast

After reading the list of complaints, I thought, “Wow, those advertising standards people are thorough!”

I was watching CNN when they had viewers call in to express their opinions (after CNN played an edited clip) and it was interesting to hear opposing viewpoints. One man with four daughters said it was disgusting since it exploits women. A woman caller said it’s no racier than the Victoria’s Secret commercials and fashion show and might get her teenage son to eat more vegetables!

I agree with the woman. This ad isn’t any more titillating than a lot of things I see on network TV and and its message is ultimately positive: Veggies are good for you. It doesn’t matter if NBC doesn’t air it; the controversy has already helped PETA get its point across.

But you don’t have to be left out. Click below to see the spot then post a comment and tell me what you think. Remember, get the kids out of the room first or you’ll have some ‘splaining to do!

  1. The ad looks to me like a Victoria Secret spoof Saturday Night Live might do.

It’s debatable whether PETA ever intended for it to run.

It reminds me of the hoopla over a supposed proposal to put ads for a Spider Man movie on bases in Major League Baseball.

Millions of dollars worth of earned media.

  2. It’s all tongue in cheek, NBC really needs to lighten up.

Don’t think I will ever look at my broccoli the same way again though.

  3. I might have eaten more fiber when I was kid if commercials like this had aired. I sometimes view what PETA does as domestic terrorism, but I have to say they got it right this time.

  4. Geez, I’m glad NBC listed all the imagery, it took repeated viewings (pure research, mind you) to see all the imagery they had a problem with. Is NBC run by the PTA or something?

  5. Super Bowl Sunday is known for its pushing-the-envelope commercials. At least this one is coming from a healthy place. NBC got it wrong.

  6. Good grief, I must get me to my optometrist… I didn’t see any of those things when I watched it!
